Zelenskiy Warns of Russian Troop Buildup Near Northern Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that Russia has assembled approximately 50,000 troops near Ukraine’s northern Sumy region. Zelenskiy commented that Ukraine has taken measures to prevent Moscow from launching a large-scale offensive in the area. The buildup coincides with Russia’s apparent preparations for a summer offensive amid ongoing tensions.

Zelenskiy pointed out that Russia’s largest forces are currently positioned on the Kursk front, aiming to push Ukrainian troops out of the border region and potentially initiate new offensive actions against Sumy. He noted that Russia recently captured several border villages and has been advancing slowly in parts of eastern Ukraine near Kostyantynivka. However, Zelenskiy said Ukrainian forces managed to push back Russian advances by about 4 km over two days.

The President also highlighted recent prisoner exchanges and ongoing diplomatic efforts, naming Turkey, the Vatican, and Switzerland as likely venues for future negotiations with Russia. Zelenskiy plans to attend the upcoming G7 summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and expects to participate in the EU summit. Ukraine’s leader emphasized the need for significant arms supplies, requesting $30 billion to fully support Ukraine’s rapidly growing arms industry.
