Zelenskiy Claims He Discussed Air Defense and Sanctions with Trump at Vatican Meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he held a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of Pope Francis' funeral at the Vatican, describing it as the "best" meeting he and Trump have ever had.

During their discussion, Zelenskiy said they talked about Ukraine’s need for better air defense systems and the importance of sanctions on Russia. He mentioned that Trump responded very strongly to the sanctions issue, though he did not provide specific details.

Zelenskiy also highlighted the recent minerals deal signed between Ukraine and the U.S., which aims to give Washington preferential access to Ukrainian minerals for reconstruction efforts and to support Ukraine’s future defense. He emphasized that the agreement would help Ukraine protect its territory and attract U.S. investment.

Regarding security, Zelenskiy stressed Ukraine’s need for more effective air defenses and said he discussed the number of systems required. Trump reportedly responded that efforts would be made, though he acknowledged these systems are not free.

The meeting took place amid broader frustration in the U.S. over the lack of peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Zelenskiy reiterated Ukraine’s stance for an unconditional ceasefire of at least 30 days and stated that he is willing to consider a truce if it lasts that long. However, he expressed that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign visitors at the upcoming May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, citing security concerns and Russia’s responsibility for their safety.
