We can achieve great things at Real Madrid, Alonso says

Xabi Alonso has been named Real Madrid’s new manager, a move that has sparked excitement among fans. Speaking at his unveiling, the Spaniard described his return to the club as a deeply personal milestone, calling Real Madrid his "home." Alonso, who will officially begin his tenure on June 1, 2025, ahead of the Club World Cup, signed a three-year contract until June 2028. He replaces Carlo Ancelotti, whose final game was on Saturday. Alonso paid tribute to Ancelotti, crediting his former coach’s influence and expressing pride in carrying forward his legacy.

Alonso inherits a talented squad featuring players like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, whom he described as "differential" talents capable of making a significant impact. His vision is clear: a flexible, dynamic style of play that adapts to modern football’s demands while igniting passion among fans. He emphasized creating a strong connection with supporters, aiming for an ambitious team that plays with energy and emotion.

The task ahead is daunting. Real Madrid’s 2024-25 season fell short of their high standards, finishing second to Barcelona in LaLiga and losing to them in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals. A Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal as defending champions added to the disappointment. Alonso, however, is undeterred, expressing confidence in the squad’s potential to achieve "important things" and restore the club’s dominance.

With his successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen behind him, Alonso brings tactical acumen and a fresh perspective. His focus on communication and maximizing player potential could unlock the squad’s full capabilities. As he steps into this high-pressure role, Alonso’s enthusiasm and deep ties to Real Madrid signal the start of an exciting new chapter for the club.
