UK Court Upholds Approval for Net Zero Teesside Power Station Project

The UK's Court of Appeal has dismissed a legal challenge against the Net Zero Teesside gas power station project.

The ruling upholds the government’s approval of the power plant, which aims to capture and store carbon emissions.

This decision supports efforts to balance energy needs with climate goals through innovative carbon capture technology.

The project, led by BP and Equinor, plans to generate 860 MW of electricity at Teesworks near Redcar.

Environmental consultant Dr. Andrew Boswell had appealed the approval, claiming insufficient environmental assessment.

However, the court ruled the government’s evaluation was lawful and properly reasoned.

The developers welcomed the verdict, while critics urge a review of carbon capture’s effectiveness in gas power plants.
