Two stats for each team after Tottenham's Europa League win over Manchester United Tottenham secured their third UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League title, their first in 41 years, with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final on Wednesday. Below are two notable stats for each team following the match: 👇
Tottenham Hotspur - Champions at Last Tottenham clinched their first trophy in 17 years with a win in Bilbao. Brennan Johnson’s goal just before halftime sealed the victory. Spurs became the sixth team to win the UEFA Europa League three or more times, joining Inter Milan, Liverpool, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid with three titles. Only Sevilla, with seven, have more. 4 - This marked the first time in 37 years that neither team in a European final qualified for a UEFA club competition through their domestic league. Tottenham, however, are familiar with this scenario. In all four instances when they reached the UEFA Cup/Europa League final, the North London club did not secure European qualification domestically. As a result, their Europa League triumph made them the first team to earn a continental spot solely as titleholders.
Manchester United's Disastrous Season Concludes 3 - Manchester United came close to a historic achievement. A victory would have made them the first team to win the Champions League (1998/99), Cup Winners’ Cup (1990/91), and Europa League without a loss in any of those campaigns. Instead, they suffered their third European final defeat after an unbeaten run in the competition, a record unmatched by any other team. Their only other continental losses also came in finals, in the 2008/09 and 2010/11 Champions League. 11 - Manchester United will miss European football next season for the first time in 11 years, including the UEFA Champions League. Their last absence was in 2014/15 after finishing seventh in the Premier League. Under current rules, they would have qualified for the Europa League as cup runners-up, but that wasn’t the case back then when cup winners’ league qualification passed the spot to runners-up.
