The South African Government has issued a gazette proposing the easing of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) licensing requirements for satellite service companies such as Starlink.
The proposal comes days after President Cyril Ramaphosa met with US President Donald Trump in a bid to repair bilateral relations between both countries.

Speaking of the intended ease of licensing requirements, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi said that this was in line with the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment.
Currently, the Electronic Communications Act requires licences to include a minimum 30% equity ownership by historically disadvantaged groups.
