Russia has announced it will assist the Taliban in Afghanistan in combating Islamic State’s Afghan branch, ISIS-K. Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s special representative for Afghanistan, described ISIS-K as a “common enemy” for both Moscow and Kabul and expressed appreciation for the Taliban’s efforts against the group.
Kabulov stated that Russia would provide support through specialized structures, despite no official recognition of the Taliban government, which took power in August 2021. Recently, Russia removed the Taliban from its terrorist list, indicating a shift towards engagement.
Moscow and Kabul are working on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, including plans to open an Afghan embassy in Moscow. Russia aims to boost trade, energy, and infrastructure cooperation, with upcoming forums to discuss joint projects like mineral development and gas pipelines.
Russia’s support comes amid ongoing Islamic State attacks in the region, including a deadly shooting near Moscow claimed by ISIS, with US intelligence indicating ISIS-K’s involvement. The Taliban says it is actively working to eliminate ISIS presence in Afghanistan.
