Putin and Turkish Foreign Minister Discuss Ukraine Peace Efforts

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Moscow to discuss ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The Turkish Foreign Ministry described the talks as focusing on recent developments and initiatives to facilitate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Fidan, on a two-day visit to Moscow, met with Putin and Russia’s lead negotiator Vladimir Medinsky. He is also scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. While no specific timetable or venue for future talks has been set, Turkey has expressed readiness to host negotiations, with Ankara positioning itself as a facilitator.

Earlier this month, delegates from Moscow and Kyiv met in Istanbul for the first time since Russia’s invasion in March 2022. The talks resulted in the exchange of prisoners and a written agreement to clarify conditions for a possible ceasefire, but no ceasefire was finalized.

The discussions in Moscow also covered bilateral issues like energy and economics, alongside the Ukraine conflict. Fidan is expected to visit Kyiv later this week to continue diplomatic efforts, supporting Turkey’s role as a potential mediator.
