Peru is making waves in the United Kingdom because conversations are on on the connections between the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, to the South American nation.
Having served over two decades in Peru, including as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023, he became a Peruvian citizen in 2015.
His humanitarian efforts during crises like the 2022 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic endeared him to many Peruvians, who now celebrate his ascension as a shared national pride.

His missionary work led him to Peru, where he served in various capacities, including seminary teacher and diocesan official.
Elected Prior General of the Augustinians in 2001, he later returned to Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo.
In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and made a cardinal.
