Luka Modric set to leave Real Madrid after Club World Cup in summer

Luka Modrić, the 39-year-old Croatian midfielder, will depart Real Madrid after the FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025, concluding an extraordinary 13-year tenure.

Having joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modrić has made nearly 600 appearances and secured 28 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga titles, cementing his status as Real Madrid’s most decorated player. His current contract, expiring on June 30, 2025, will be extended briefly to allow participation in the Club World Cup, scheduled from June 15 to July 13, 2025. Modrić’s final La Liga match at the Santiago Bernabéu is expected to be against Real Sociedad on May 24, 2025.

Despite his ambition to continue playing until the 2026 World Cup, Real Madrid has opted not to offer a long-term contract extension, prioritizing squad rejuvenation with younger players. Modrić, who remains in top form, has turned down lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and MLS clubs, as well as a coaching role with Real Madrid, underscoring his desire to keep competing at the highest level. His next destination is unclear, though interest from Middle Eastern and American clubs persists. Social media discussions highlight speculation about his exit, with some reports noting he sought a longer stay but was declined.

Modrić’s departure marks the end of an era for Real Madrid, where his vision, passing, and leadership have defined a golden generation. Fans and analysts await his decision on whether he will join another elite European club or explore new challenges elsewhere. His legacy as a footballing icon is secure, but the maestro’s final chapter remains unwritten.
