London Mayor Backs Decriminalization of Cannabis Possession

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has thrown his support behind a report from the London Drugs Commission, calling for the decriminalization of cannabis possession in the UK

The report, chaired by ex-Justice Secretary Lord Falconer, suggests that personal-use cannabis possession should not be criminalized.

Khan agrees, stating that current drug laws are outdated and disproportionately harm Black communities through biased stop-and-search policing.

The UK government and Metropolitan Police oppose the recommendation, insisting cannabis remains a Class B drug.

Critics argue decriminalization may worsen addiction and crime, while supporters say it could reduce racial bias and ease pressure on police.

Angela Rayner, Deputy Prime Minister, dismissed Khan’s stance, reinforcing national policy.
