Kenyan Activist Boniface Mwangi Released by Tanzanian Authorities

Tanzanian authorities have released Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi, who had been detained after attempting to attend a court hearing related to the treason case against Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu in Dar es Salaam, Kenya’s authorities announced on Thursday.

Mwangi was transferred to Kenya’s southeastern Kwale County, where the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) received him. Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed Mwangi’s release.

Mwangi’s arrest followed his attempt to observe Lissu’s first court appearance on Monday. Lissu, a prominent opposition figure, was charged with treason in April for a speech allegedly calling for rebellion against President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is seeking re-election in October. Lissu had survived a 2017 assassination attempt after being shot 16 times.

Mwangi was accused of providing false information to gain entry into Tanzania and was reportedly subjected to severe torture by security forces, leaving him barely able to walk. His health situation has raised concerns among rights groups, with KNCHR stating they are making arrangements to transfer him to Nairobi for medical care.

It remains unclear whether Ugandan lawyer and activist Agather Atuhaire, who was held alongside Mwangi, has also been released.

President Suluhu Hassan has publicly stated that Tanzania is committed to respecting human rights, despite a series of high-profile arrests of political opponents. She warned foreign activists against interfering in Tanzanian affairs.
