(In South Africa) R35 Million Debt Puts Cop's Life at Risk: Emergency Care Denied

A critical situation has unfolded in Johannesburg after a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer, shot in the line of duty, was denied emergency medical care at Netcare Milpark Hospital. The reason for the denial? The City of Johannesburg owes the hospital a staggering R35 million.

The officer was subsequently transferred to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life in the ICU. Cllr Sarah Wissler, Chairperson of the City's Public Safety Committee, has strongly condemned the city's failure to pay its bills, stating that it puts the lives of officers at risk.

"This is unacceptable," Wissler said. "We cannot have a situation where our officers, who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, are denied medical care because of the city's debt."

Wissler has vowed to demand a thorough investigation into all unpaid bills that could affect emergency services, ensuring that those who serve the community receive the care they need in times of crisis. The incident highlights the need for urgent action to address the city's debt crisis and ensure that emergency services are not compromised.
