Rivers State is commanding widespread attention in Nigeria as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, two months after declaring a State of Emergency in the region, has proposed a N1.481 trillion budget for 2025 to the National Assembly for review and approval. In a letter to lawmakers, Tinubu explained that the new budget submission was necessitated by the Supreme Court’s nullification of the 2025 budget previously presented by the ousted governor, Sim Fubara, which was deemed invalid due to legal and procedural irregularities. The president’s intervention aims to stabilize the state’s governance and ensure fiscal continuity amid ongoing political turmoil. The proposed budget has sparked intense discussions among Nigerians, with many analyzing its implications for Rivers State’s development, particularly in areas like infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Supporters view Tinubu’s move as a decisive step to restore order, while critics question the federal government’s role in state-level budgeting and its potential impact on local autonomy. Social media platforms are abuzz with reactions, reflecting the deep political divisions in the oil-rich state. As the National Assembly deliberates, the budget proposal underscores the complex interplay of judicial, executive, and regional dynamics, keeping Rivers State at the forefront of national discourse.
In a letter addressed to the Senate and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu disclosed that of the 1.481 trillion Naira budget proposal, ₦324 billion will be allocated to infrastructure, ₦166 billion to healthcare, ₦75.6 billion to education, and ₦31.4 billion to agriculture.
