(In Nigeria) Mokwa Reels from Deadly Floods Claiming Over 110 Lives, Rescue Efforts Continue

Mokwa, a market town in Niger State, Nigeria, is reeling from catastrophic floods that killed at least 110 people after torrential rains struck on May 28, 2025. The relentless downpour, lasting several hours, submerged over 50 homes, sweeping away residents and possessions, with many washed into the Niger River. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) reports that the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa districts were the hardest hit.

Mokwa’s District Head, Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, noted that the community had not faced such devastating flooding in 60 years. As of May 31, search and rescue operations continue, with over 75 bodies recovered and buried, though more remain missing.

The Nigerian government has expressed sorrow and deployed emergency agencies to assist, but the rising death toll and ongoing crisis highlight Nigeria’s vulnerability to seasonal flooding
