The father of Kehinde Alade, the 14-year-old student killed by a stray police bullet in Oyo State, has spoken out. He admitted that he was driving against traffic when officials of OYTMA and the police confronted him. The fatal shot was fired during the encounter, leaving his son, who was in the vehicle with him, dead. This new information has negated our earlier report that the Police were chasing suspected fraudsters. The Police officers were actually chasing him.

Now that it has been confirmed that the Honda driver in Monday’s incident was the boy’s father, his reckless defiance led to a police chase, but nothing justifies what followed. On no account should officers fire live bullets at a traffic offender. That response is reserved for armed criminals or terrorists, not civilians. The boy’s death is on both father and police. While the man may never recover from his guilt, the officer must face justice. This tragedy reflects a deadly abuse of power.
