The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) has been making headlines in both Ghana and the United Kingdom due to its high-profile investigations. One notable case is the arrest of Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for alleged illegal mining activities.

Public reactions range from surprise to humor, with some praising EOCO’s accountability efforts.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), established in 2010 under Ghana’s Act 804, focuses on combating economic crimes like fraud, money laundering, and illegal mining.

Its recent actions, particularly the Wontumi arrest, have sparked widespread interest, with public sentiment reflecting both support and skepticism.

Many are unaware of EOCO’s mandate, driving curiosity and debate about its role in addressing organized crime and ensuring accountability in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the minority caucus has boycotted parliamentary proceedings in solidarity with Wontumi, who remains in EOCO custody under a GHS 50 million bail condition.

Critics argue this is a deliberate attempt to punish him, calling it a clear case of human rights abuse.
