Germany Charges Three with Spying on Ukrainian in Possible Assassination Plot

German prosecutors have charged three individuals—one Ukrainian, one Russian, and one Armenian—with espionage and activities as foreign agents, linked to a suspected plot to kill a Ukrainian who fought for Ukraine’s armed forces following Russia’s invasion.

The Armenian suspect, identified only as Vardges I, is believed to have been recruited by Russian intelligence to monitor the Ukrainian target. Ukrainian national Robert A. and Russian national Arman S. allegedly assisted in the operation.

The plot involved a supposed meeting at a café in Frankfurt in June 2024, which the target missed after German authorities received a tip-off. The mission’s aim appeared to be gathering intelligence and possibly executing the targeted killing.

All three suspects have been in custody since their arrest on June 19, 2024, the day the meeting was supposed to take place.
