Former U.S. President Joe Biden accused current U.S. president Donald Trump of engaging in "modern-day appeasement" toward Russia.

Former U.S. President Joe Biden criticised his successor, Donald Trump, during an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, accusing him of engaging in "modern-day appeasement" toward Russia. Biden argued that Trump's pressure on Ukraine to cede territory to Russia amounts to a policy that will not satisfy Moscow, emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes Ukraine is inherently part of "mother Russia."

Biden expressed confusion over the belief held by some that allowing a dictator like Putin to seize substantial parts of land will ultimately bring peace. He warned that such a stance risks emboldening Russia further and undermining the stability of the region. Additionally, Biden voiced concerns about the impact this perception has on Europe's confidence in the United States. He suggested that European leaders are questioning whether they can rely on American leadership, raising fears that a lack of U.S. resolve could weaken Western unity and resolve in the face of Russia’s aggression.
