Fiorentina's Zaniolo denies alleged physical altercation with Roma youth players

Nicolò Zaniolo, a Fiorentina loanee from Galatasaray, has refuted claims of physically assaulting two Roma youth players after a Primavera Championship semifinal match on May 26, 2025. Fiorentina secured a 2-1 victory, advancing past Roma’s youth squad. Roma’s official statement accused Zaniolo of entering their Primavera team’s dressing room, engaging in provocative behavior, and striking two players. The allegations sparked controversy, prompting a swift response from the 25-year-old midfielder.

In a statement released via Fiorentina’s website, Zaniolo clarified his actions. He admitted to visiting the Roma locker room but said his intent was to congratulate the players on their season. According to him, he was met with insults, prompting him to leave to avoid further conflict. Zaniolo firmly denied any physical altercation, emphasizing that no assault occurred. The conflicting accounts have left the incident shrouded in uncertainty, as no video footage has surfaced to confirm either side’s claims.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has opened an investigation to determine the truth behind the allegations. If found guilty, Zaniolo could face a significant ban, potentially impacting his season with Fiorentina, where he has been a key player. The incident has drawn attention due to Zaniolo’s history with Roma, where he rose to prominence before his transfer to Galatasaray. Fans and analysts are divided, with some questioning Roma’s motives in publicizing the accusation, while others demand accountability if the claims are substantiated.

For now, the investigation’s outcome remains uncertain, and both clubs await further developments. This situation underscores the tensions that can arise in competitive youth football, with Zaniolo’s reputation and immediate future hanging in the balance as the FIGC probes deeper.
