Earps announces shock England retirement after losing place

 

Mary Earps, the 32-year-old England goalkeeper, has retired from international football effective immediately, a surprising decision announced on May 27, 2025, five weeks before the Lionesses defend their European Championship title in Switzerland. Earps, who earned 53 caps, was instrumental in England’s Euro 2022 victory and their run to the 2023 World Cup final, where she won the Golden Glove. Her retirement follows her loss of the starting goalkeeper position to Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton, who has been preferred in recent matches, including a 1-0 victory over Spain in February.
