Conflicting Claims in Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations: Hamas Says It Agrees, Israel Dismisses Proposal
Recent reports indicate a conflicting situation regarding a proposed Gaza ceasefire. A Palestinian official close to Hamas stated that the group has agreed to a proposal mediated by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, which involves the release of 10 hostages and a 70-day ceasefire, along with partial withdrawal from Gaza. Additionally, the proposal reportedly includes the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
However, Israeli officials have rejected the proposal, with one stating that no responsible government could accept such an agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope for developments but emphasized that Israel's position is that only a temporary ceasefire in exchange for hostages is acceptable, with the ultimate goal being the eradication of Hamas.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing military actions by Israel in Gaza following escalations after Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties and hostages. Hamas has expressed willingness to free the remaining hostages and pursue a permanent ceasefire if Israel fully withdraws from Gaza, but Israel maintains a stance focused on defeating Hamas before any lasting peace can be considered.
