Bayer Leverkusen appoint Erik ten Hag as new head coach, replacing Xabi Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen have named Erik ten Hag as their new head coach, succeeding Xabi Alonso, who departed for Real Madrid. The announcement came on May 26, 2025, with Ten Hag’s appointment confirmed as a done deal. The Dutch manager, previously sacked by Manchester United in October 2024, has inked a two-year contract with the Bundesliga club.

Ten Hag brings a wealth of experience, having managed Ajax, Bayern Munich’s second team, and Manchester United, where he secured the League Cup and FA Cup. His familiarity with German football and tactical acumen make him a strong fit for Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga in 2023-24 under Alonso. This season, Leverkusen finished second, 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.

The 54-year-old faces immediate challenges, with star players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong attracting interest from top European clubs. Wirtz, in particular, has been linked with Bayern Munich, while Frimpong’s future remains uncertain. Ten Hag’s task will be to maintain Leverkusen’s competitive edge while navigating potential squad changes.

His appointment has sparked excitement among fans, with many eager to see how his disciplined, high-pressing style translates to the Bundesliga. Leverkusen’s sporting director praised Ten Hag’s track record and vision, expressing confidence in his ability to build on Alonso’s legacy. The club aims to challenge for silverware and compete in Europe under his leadership.

Ten Hag’s first match in charge is expected after the international break, with preparations already underway. This move marks a fresh chapter for both the manager and Leverkusen as they aim to reclaim the Bundesliga crown.
