5 biggest clubs not to qualify for European football next year: Man Utd, AC Milan… Top clubs from La Liga, Serie A, and the Premier League will miss out on European football in the 2025-26 season. Poor domestic league results mean these teams won’t be traveling Europe for the next year. Here are five regular European contenders who won’t qualify next season:
Manchester United A dismal 2024-25 Premier League season leaves United languishing in 16th, with Ruben Amorim failing to turn the tide since his November appointment. Relief came in the Europa League, where victories over Lyon and Athletic Bilbao paved the way to the final, only for a lackluster 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the decider. While Spurs, despite their own domestic struggles, revel in Champions League qualification, United face a pivotal summer to rebuild.
AC Milan AC Milan, with their storied history of seven European Cups, face a tough reality after a lackluster 2024-25 season, missing out on European competition next year. The Rossoneri have struggled significantly, languishing in ninth place in Serie A with just one match left. A defeat to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final further dashed hopes of sneaking into the Europa League. As a result, standout performer Christian Pulisic will miss out on continental football in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup, hosted in the USA.
Sevilla If there were a global trophy for consistency, Sevilla would be the gold standard. They’ve dominated the Europa League, clinching the title an unmatched seven times. However, their LaLiga performance last season was lackluster, leaving them stuck in mid-table mediocrity. The 2022-23 season followed a similar script, but their Europa League triumph masked the domestic struggles. This year, Sevilla’s form has plummeted further, with the team languishing in 16th place. To add insult to injury, local rivals Betis are shining in the Conference League final. The path to redemption looks steep.
Real Sociedad We considered Valencia for this spot, but their absence from European competitions in recent years tipped the scales toward Sociedad. A consistent presence in the Europa League and fresh off a Champions League knockout appearance last season, Real Sociedad are a notable force. Sitting 11th in LaLiga at the moment, the San Sebastian club may miss out on European action next season. The departure of Martin Zubimendi to Arsenal signals potential further changes ahead.
RB Leipzig Marcel Schäfer, RB Leipzig's sporting director, sharply criticized the team's performance in the 2024-25 Bundesliga season, marking their worst-ever finish in the league. A 3-2 home defeat to Stuttgart sealed Leipzig's seventh-place finish, excluding them from European competitions for the first time since their 2016 promotion. The club managed only 13 victories in 34 matches, their lowest win total since joining Germany's top flight. "We gained no new insights. This season was a letdown for the players, team, and club. We fell short of our objectives," Schäfer stated. "That's why we're in this position, missing out on international play next year."
