The US military has launched a strike on Yemen's Ras Isa fuel port, located in western Yemen, according to the US Central Command. The aim of the strike is to "eliminate this source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists," the Command stated.
The US said the goal of the strike is to target the Houghtis economically while minimizing harm to the Yemeni people. This action is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the Houthis' capabilities and resources. The Houthi-run health ministry reported 38 people killed and 102 injured, mostly workers at the port.
The strike reflects the escalating tensions between the US and the Houthis, who have been involved in the Yemen conflict for years. The US has been supporting the Saudi-led coalition in the conflict, and the strike is seen as a move to further weaken the Houthis' position.
The strike aimed to cut off revenue to the Houthis, who use fuel to sustain their military operations and benefit economically from embezzling profits.
The US claims its campaign is working, with multiple Houthi leaders killed, according to National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. However, the attacks have had limited impact on the group's capabilities so far. The US military operation against Houthi militants in Yemen has cost nearly $1 billion in three weeks.
