UN Chief 'Deeply Alarmed' by Israeli Strike on Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm on Tuesday regarding the Israeli strike on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza that occurred on Sunday. A spokesperson for Guterres emphasized that, under international humanitarian law, the protection and respect for medical personnel, facilities, and the wounded are paramount.

The attack on the hospital has been described as a severe blow to Gaza's already devastated healthcare system, with rising concerns about dwindling medical supplies, food, and water availability in the region.

The strike, which involved two Israeli missiles targeting the major Gaza hospital, left its emergency department inoperable and damaged various other structures, according to medical personnel. Israeli authorities claimed the strike was aimed at Hamas fighters allegedly using the hospital as cover. Reports indicate that prior to the attack, hospital officials received a warning call from someone identifying as Israeli security, prompting the evacuation of patients.

The situation has been exacerbated by the halting of humanitarian supplies into the Palestinian enclave since March 2, following Israel's blockage of aid trucks amid stalled negotiations after the truce's collapse. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that 25,000 aid trucks entered Gaza during the previous ceasefire but accused Hamas of misusing these supplies to strengthen its military capabilities, a claim denied by the group.
