Antarctica is trending in the United Kingdom and the United States because Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on barren, uninhabited volcanic islands near Antarctica.

The US president recently announced a 10% tariff on goods from these remote territories, including Heard Island and McDonald Islands, which belong to Australia. These islands are home to penguins and have no human population, yet they’ve been affected by Trump’s trade war.
The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, expressed surprise that even these remote regions were not exempt from tariffs, stating that "nowhere on earth is safe." The tariff applies to Australia’s external territories, including Norfolk Island, which faces a 29% tariff.
Norfolk Island, with a population of 2,188, has minimal trade with the United States, making the tariff seem disproportionate.
Additionally, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, which have no buildings or inhabitants, are listed as exporters in trade data.
