Russia Says It Is Waiting for Ukraine’s Response to May Ceasefire and Peace Talks

The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that Ukraine has not responded to Russia’s numerous offers by President Vladimir Putin to initiate direct peace negotiations. Russia indicated uncertainty about whether Ukraine would join the three-day ceasefire Putin announced for next month.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “It was President Putin who repeatedly said that Russia is ready, without any preconditions, to start the negotiations process. We have not heard a response from the Kyiv regime so far.”

On Monday, Putin declared a ceasefire from May 8-10, coinciding with Russia’s planned commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

In response, Ukraine questioned why Moscow would not agree to a longer ceasefire—at least 30 days—and called for an immediate halt to hostilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that “we value people's lives and not parades,” highlighting the difference in priorities.

Peskov emphasized the uncertainty surrounding Ukraine's intentions, calling it “very difficult to understand” whether Kyiv plans to participate in the ceasefire. The development points to ongoing delays and complexities in efforts to negotiate peace amid continued tensions.
