Russia Says It Is Not Easy to Agree on Ukraine Peace Deal with USRussian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that reaching a consensus with the United States regarding a potential peace deal to end the ongoing war in Ukraine is proving to be difficult. Lavrov emphasized that Russia would not allow itself to become economically dependent on the West again. In an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, he noted that discussions regarding key components of a settlement are ongoing but acknowledged the challenges in achieving agreement. "We are well aware of what a mutually beneficial deal looks like, which we have never rejected, and what a deal could lead us into another trap," he asserted. Lavrov also commented on the Kremlin's stance, indicating that it is too early to expect tangible results from efforts to normalize relations with Washington.

Lavrov reiterated President Vladimir Putin's position, articulated in June 2024, that Ukraine must formally abandon its ambitions to join NATO and withdraw its troops from regions that Russia claims as its own. He highlighted that approximately one-fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea, is currently under Russian control, with Lavrov asserting that these territories are valued for the rights of their inhabitants. While Lavrov praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of NATO’s expansion as a contributing factor to the conflict, he warned that Russia's political elite would reject any initiatives that could result in renewed dependence on Western nations. Lavrov criticized the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on Russia, China, and Iran, claiming these measures have disrupted the global economy and exacerbated tensions. Meanwhile, Biden, Western European leaders, and Ukraine continue to characterize Russia's actions as an imperialistic land grab, pledging to defeat Russian forces and restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
