Kremlin: No Grounds for Peace Talks with Japan
The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that Russia sees no reason to engage in discussions regarding a long-awaited peace treaty with Japan to officially conclude World War II, citing Tokyo's unfriendly attitude toward Moscow. As the successor state to the Soviet Union, Russia has never signed a treaty that formally ends hostilities with Japan, which have persisted since the conflict. At the war’s conclusion, Soviet forces seized control of four islands off Japan's Hokkaido—referred to as the Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan. This territorial dispute has been a significant obstacle to finalizing a peace agreement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that there are currently "no contacts with the Japanese authorities," responding to a Japanese Foreign Ministry report that emphasized Tokyo’s commitment to signing a treaty and restoring the islands. Peskov criticized Japan for aligning itself with Western sanctions against Russia, aimed at penalizing the country for its military actions in Ukraine. In light of "the real state of affairs" and Japan's sanctions, Peskov concluded that "it is hardly possible to talk about the possibility of any negotiations."
