Nigerians Slam Police Over Viral Video of Officers Collecting Cash from Chinese Nationals

A viral video showing Nigerian police officers receiving cash from Chinese nationals has sparked outrage on social media, prompting widespread calls for reform within the Nigeria Police Force. The footage, which circulated widely on Tuesday, shows armed officers in uniform lined up and accepting naira notes from the foreign nationals in what appears to be a coordinated exchange. The incident has drawn condemnation from many Nigerians online, who have labeled the situation as embarrassing and disgraceful. Numerous comments reflect a deep sense of disappointment in the police force and a broader frustration with systemic issues within the organization.

REACTIONS One Twitter user, identified as , expressed his distress, saying, “I didn’t know when tears dropped from my eyes. This is the height of it all. So embarrassing. This is a national tragedy. If the Inspector General of Police does not tender his resignation, then we are done for it.” Another user, , tagged President Bola Tinubu, urging him to disband the Nigeria Police Force and promote state policing, stating, “Sir, it’s time to disband the NPF and create state police. This is embarrassing. The IG should resign in shame.” Similar sentiments were echoed by other users, with remarking, “What a shame? Nigerian police is shameless,” and adding, “They were boldly collecting the money while fully armed and even on camera. Embarrassing. Unprofessional.”

Some commenters raised concerns about the implications of this behavior on Nigeria’s international reputation. User noted, “Tomorrow, the government will complain about Nigerians demarketing Nigeria. But the government and its officials are solely responsible for Nigeria’s image abroad.” Another user, , questioned the officers’ ability to act impartially in the future, stating, “If they commit a crime, will these police have the guts to arrest them?”. While many condemned the officers for receiving money from foreigners, others pointed to systemic issues such as inadequate welfare and working conditions. User commented, “We need to take care of our police officers better. It will help them to perform better. Police don show me shege before oooo and many of them do not deserve kindness. But many of them also do.”

In contrast, a few users defended the gesture. User argued, “There’s nothing wrong here. If you listen to what they’re saying, ‘five thousand naira each to our police friends,’ ‘thank you, thank you,’ that’s what the Chinese people were saying.” As of now, the Nigeria Police Force has not released an official response to the viral video. The incident highlights the urgent need for reforms in policing practices and public trust in law enforcement across Nigeria.
