Nigeria Police to Sanction Officers Caught Receiving Money from Chinese Nationals

The Nigeria Police Force announced on Thursday that it will take disciplinary action against its personnel who were seen receiving money from Chinese nationals in a viral video that sparked widespread outrage on social media. 

In the footage, police officers in uniform and armed, were observed accepting cash from the foreign nationals in what appeared to be a coordinated and deliberate exchange. The incident has drawn significant criticism from the public, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment and calling for urgent reforms within the police force. Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi condemned the conduct of the officers involved, labeling their actions as both unprofessional and unethical. He emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and public trust.  The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognizance of a disturbing video making rounds in the media space, showing police officers receiving money from a Chinese national,” Adejobi stated. The Force has strongly condemned the conduct exhibited by the police officers in the video, describing it as unprofessional and unethical. The actions of the officers do not represent the established ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

Adejobi confirmed that the officers captured in the video have been identified and are currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, though he did not specify the nature of the sanctions they would face. He assured the public that appropriate justice would be served. In addition, Adejobi issued a warning to individuals and organizations that utilize police services, especially those requiring escorts and guards. "The Nigeria Police Force hereby cautions individuals and organizations privileged to the services of police personnel, particularly as escorts and guards or other specialized services, to desist from any act capable of degrading the integrity of its officers and bringing the Force to disrepute," he warned. The Nigeria Police Force’s swift response to the incident reflects a broader acknowledgment of the need for accountability and reform within its ranks in the wake of public scrutiny and calls for improved ethical standards.
