Mykhaylo Mudryk doping ban update as Chelsea star 'takes lie detector test'
Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk, provisionally suspended since December 2024 for testing positive for meldonium, reportedly passed a lie detector test to support his claim of unintentional doping, according to Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin.
The 24 year old winger, who denies knowingly using the banned substance, took the test as part of his legal defense. The positive result came from a routine urine sample in October 2024, confirmed in December, leading to his suspension. Mudryk last played on November 28, scoring in Chelsea’s Conference League win over Heidenheim. He’s currently barred from playing or training at Chelsea’s Cobham facility and faces a potential four year ban under FA rules if found guilty. His B sample results, critical to the case, remain undisclosed as of April 22, 2025. Palkin, whose club could lose €30 million in bonuses from Mudryk’s £89 million transfer, says the player is confused, with lawyers investigating possible supplement contamination or sabotage. Chelsea, supporting Mudryk, provided a fitness program during his ban, while his legal team, including Morgan Sports Law, works to clear his name. Mudryk has stayed largely silent, though a tearful emoji on Chelsea’s Instagram suggests his emotional strain. The FA has yet to formally charge him, and delays in B sample results have raised transparency concerns.
While the lie detector test may strengthen his case, doping rules focus on strict liability, meaning only evidence of sabotage or testing flaws could significantly reduce a potential ban. Chelsea fans and Mudryk await clarity as the case drags on, with his career at a critical juncture.
