Japan PM warns US tariffs have potential to disrupt global economic order

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has warned that US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump could disrupt the global economic order. Despite this strong warning, Ishiba emphasized Japan's commitment to finding common ground with the US on trade and national security issues. Ahead of bilateral trade talks scheduled for Thursday, Ishiba stressed the importance of understanding the logic and emotional elements behind Trump's arguments.

The upcoming talks will cover key themes, including tariffs, non-tariff barriers and exchange rates. Notably, Trump recently announced tariff exclusions for certain Chinese imports, such as smartphones and computers, which might influence the trade discussions. Japan's Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa will lead the trade talks, while Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato will discuss currency rates with US Treasury Secretary. Japan is preparing to cushion the economic blow from US tariffs, although no supplementary budget is currently planned. Both Japan and the US agree that excessive market volatility would harm the economy, as stated by Finance Minister Kato. With Trump's announcement of impending tariff rates on imported semiconductors, the trade talks will be closely watched for their impact on the global economy.
