(In The .U.S): Trump Contradicts Beijing, Insists U.S.-China Trade Talks Are Ongoing.

President Donald Trump on Thursday pushed back against Chinese claims that no trade negotiations have taken place, asserting that discussions between Washington and Beijing are in fact ongoing despite the heightened trade tensions.

“They had a meeting this morning,” Trump told reporters, without naming any participants. When pressed, he added, “It doesn’t matter who ‘they’ is.” He hinted that additional information about these talks might be disclosed soon.

The statement came in direct contrast to comments from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, who denied any such negotiations.

“China and the United States have not conducted consultations or negotiations on tariffs, let alone reached an agreement,” Guo said, dismissing reports of discussions as “false news.”

However, a White House official later confirmed that lower-level U.S. and Chinese officials held in-person meetings this week, along with a separate phone conversation, adding another layer of confusion to the back-and-forth.

The conflicting narratives underscore the deepening mistrust and breakdown in communication between the two powers.

As the trade war drags on, both economies are showing signs of strain. American businesses are grappling with mounting import costs, while Chinese exporters face waning demand from the U.S. market.

Earlier this month, the White House imposed a sweeping 145 percent tariff on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to strike back with new levies and tighter restrictions on vital mineral exports to the U.S.

Despite the rising economic toll, both Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have hinted at a possible thaw.

Bessent acknowledged that dialing back extreme tariffs would be necessary to create space for real negotiations, emphasizing that easing tensions is key to restoring balance between the world’s two largest economies.
