Presidency: Defections to APC Are Voluntary, Not Forced

The Presidency has clarified that the recent defections of opposition politicians to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were voluntary and not under any form of duress. In a statement issued by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, it was emphasized that democracy is not under threat simply because politicians exercise their rights of association. This clarification comes amid accusations that the political landscape in Nigeria is shifting towards a one-party state, prompting concerns about the state of Nigerian democracy. Notable defections recently occurred, including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other key political figures. These moves have further depleted the ranks of the main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), leading to speculation about the ability of opposition parties to adequately challenge the ruling APC in the next election cycle. Onanuga insisted that individuals migrating to the APC are doing so out of genuine belief in the reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Onanuga dismissed claims that the challenges facing opposition parties are the result of any orchestrated efforts by the ruling party, stating that the opposition must take responsibility for its internal issues, which he characterized as a product of “poor organization, indiscipline, and gross incompetence.” He also noted that political shifts and party changes are a normal feature of any democracy, citing examples from more advanced democracies where politicians frequently change their party affiliations. The statement reaffirmed President Tinubu's commitment to upholding democratic values and insisted that freedom of association is a cherished ideal in Nigeria's democracy. Onanuga urged all Nigerians to respect the choices of their fellow citizens and to remain cautious of alarmist narratives that claim a drift towards authoritarianism. He concluded by calling for unity in protecting and strengthening Nigeria's democratic foundations, reiterating that the APC under President Tinubu remains committed to a thriving multiparty system.
