Nigeria Commuters, Motorists Stranded After Auto Crash on Kara Bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Road Thousands of commuters and motorists found themselves stranded on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday following an accident involving multiple vehicles on the Kara Bridge, specifically in the direction of OPIC. The incident, which occurred around 7 am, involved several trucks and cars, resulting in significant traffic congestion along this critical route that connects Nigeria’s economic hub to other parts of the country. Authorities have reported that there were no casualties, although some individuals sustained injuries. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "We recorded an accident on the Kara bridge inward OPIC on the Lagos Ibadan Express Way with multiple vehicles. LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders have swung into action to rescue the victims and also clear the affected vehicles." The agency also urged road users to exercise patience as traffic was severely impacted, extending all the way back to the Otedola Bridge.
Upon their arrival at the scene, we witnessed emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and LASTMA actively engaged in clearing the site and directing traffic. The resulting gridlock stretched to the Mowe area and reached as far as the 7-Up section of Lagos State, forcing some commuters to abandon their vehicles and trek to their destinations while others awaited the resolution of the congestion. In a subsequent update, LASTMA announced, "All vehicles involved in the earlier reported accident on Kara bridge inwards OPIC have now been successfully evacuated. Hence, the road has been reopened for full capacity use." They continued to have officers on-site to manage traffic flow and clear the backlog caused by the incident. This accident adds to a concerning trend of incidents on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which frequently sees accidents involving articulated vehicles. Despite recent upgrades to the road, the expressway remains a high-risk area for collisions, highlighting ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety of commuters.
