(In Nigeria) Lagos Island Celebrates Afro-Brazilian Heritage in Color

Lagos Island is making wave in Nigeria because the vibrant Lagos Fanti Carnival has returned, drawing crowds to Marina in a colourful celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage.

Rooted in the city's colonial past, the carnival honours descendants of formerly enslaved Africans who resettled in Lagos.

Streets were alive with samba rhythms, dazzling costumes, and a joyful reconnection to a rich cultural legacy that continues to shape Lagos Island’s identity.

This year’s carnival featured an Afro-Brazilian Food Showcase, a Heritage Art Exhibition, and the iconic parade. Traditional masquerades danced alongside samba-inspired drum ensembles, as local musicians lit up the atmosphere.

The return of this historic event united the community in a celebration of resilience, creativity, and shared history.

Lagos Island once again stood proudly as a hub of culture, rhythm, and Afro-Brazilian tradition.
