Easter Tragedy: Gombe Governor Orders Probe After Trailer Kills Five

A somber Easter celebration turned tragic on Monday when a trailer transporting goods collided with a group of worshippers during a procession along the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway in the Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State. The state police confirmed that the accident resulted in the deaths of five individuals—two males and three females—and left several others injured.

In response to the incident, Governor Inuwa Yahaya ordered a full investigation into the tragedy. He described the occurrence as "heartbreaking and regrettable," expressing deep sympathy to the families of the victims and the Christian community in Billiri.

"This is a dark and painful moment for the families affected and for all of us as a people," Yahaya stated. "On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the swift and full recovery of those currently receiving treatment.

The tragedy sparked unrest in the area, as irate youths took to the streets. Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer involved in the crash was set ablaze by an angry crowd demanding the release of the driver from police custody. Tensions escalated into clashes between protesters and police, resulting in looting and theft of motorcycles in various parts of Billiri. Law enforcement eventually managed to restore order.

Governor Yahaya emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring justice and vowed that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law. He called for calm and collective healing, stating, "We will come out of this tragedy more united.

Officials have begun investigations to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident. Authorities have urged residents to remain peaceful and allow due process to unfold. The police condemned the violent reactions and requested that the community cooperate with law enforcement during the investigation.

Commissioner of Police Bello Yahaya expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He assured the public that security measures have been strengthened in the area to prevent further unrest, advising residents to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activity to local police stations.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence; in December 2024, a Sharon vehicle struck a Christmas procession, resulting in fatalities. Similarly, in 2019, members of the Boys Brigade lost their lives after being hit by a vehicle during an Easter march. These recurring tragedies have heightened calls for stronger safety measures during religious events and reinforced traffic control on major routes during festive seasons.
