In a move shaking the foundations of Delta State politics, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending a 26-year era of PDP dominance in the state.
The high-profile defection was announced during a strategic meeting at the Government House in Asaba, where Oborevwori was joined by top commissioners and National Assembly members in a mass political migration.
This shift is part of a broader wave of realignments rocking Nigeria’s political landscape.
Senator Sumaila Kawu, who was elected under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano South, has also crossed over to the APC.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Senator Nelda Imasuen of Edo State is preparing to exit the Labour Party for the ruling party, with mounting internal strife in Labour adding fuel to the fire.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu shed light on the backstory of the Delta defection, noting that months of quiet consultations and increasing frustration with the PDP’s national direction pushed the governor and his allies to reconsider their stance.
He echoed local sentiments, comparing the PDP’s waning appeal to the fading sweetness of old palm wine.
Governor Oborevwori highlighted the need for stronger collaboration with federal actors and local leaders, stressing that the move was driven by a commitment to more effective governance and community development.
APC leaders have hailed the defections as a political breakthrough and a sign of growing national influence.
Further south, Honourable Oluwole Oke of Osun State has also parted ways with the PDP, citing similar dissatisfaction with the party’s trajectory. And in Kano South, Senator Kawu stated that his decision to join the APC was guided by a desire to deliver more robust representation and service to his constituents.
As for Senator Imasuen, his rumored defection continues to dominate political chatter, with APC figures actively courting him to fortify their growing coalition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
With cracks widening across opposition parties, the APC appears to be tightening its grip on the national political chessboard.
