The PDP Governors' Forum has declared that the party will not pursue any coalitions or mergers with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. This decision was made during a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, where the governors emphasized their confidence in the party's ability to reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Key Points
- No Coalition Plans: The PDP Governors' Forum stated that the party will go solo in the 2027 elections, rejecting potential alliances with other parties.
- Open to New Members: Despite rejecting coalitions, the governors expressed willingness to welcome individuals, groups, or parties interested in joining PDP to challenge the APC.
- Support for Siminalayi Fubara: The forum reaffirmed its backing for the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
- Condemnation of Insecurity: The PDP leaders condemned the current state of insecurity in the country, calling for a reassessment and restructuring of priorities and strategies.
Background
The decision comes as opposition politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have been advocating for a coalition to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections. Atiku has denied rumors of defecting from the PDP, stating that his efforts are aimed at forming a robust coalition to oust the APC and give Nigerians a better life.
In the communique, the Forum re-emphasised the need to protect constitutional democracy, calling on the Supreme Court to interpret the law on state emergencies.
They condemned recent violence in Plateau, Borno, Katsina, and Edo States.
Plans were made for a NEC meeting on 27 May and a national convention in August. Zoning and Convention Committees were announced.
The Forum also thanked Governor Seyi Makinde and Oyo State for their warm hospitality.
