Ostapenko stuns Sabalenka to win Stuttgart Open

Jelena Ostapenko delivered a stunning performance to defeat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-1, clinching the 2025 Stuttgart Open title. The unseeded No. 24 ranked Latvian secured her ninth career WTA title and her first on clay since winning the 2017 French Open. Ostapenko dominated from the start, breaking Sabalenka early in both sets and winning 81% of her first serve points. Her aggressive baseline play and precise shot making, including a commanding run of 14 points in 17 during the second set, overwhelmed Sabalenka, who lost her fourth Stuttgart final in five years.

Ostapenko’s path to the title was remarkable, defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, improving her head to head record against her to 6-0, and Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinals. This victory marked Ostapenko’s first win over Sabalenka in four career meetings and showcased her ability to compete at the highest level. The win propels her to No. 18 in the WTA rankings, signaling a strong resurgence as she heads to the Madrid Open.

Sabalenka, despite the defeat, remains a formidable force on the WTA tour. Her powerful game couldn’t find rhythm against Ostapenko’s relentless pressure, but her consistency this season keeps her among the favorites for upcoming tournaments. The Stuttgart Open, a key clay court event, highlighted Ostapenko’s potential to disrupt the top ranks and reaffirmed her status as a dangerous player when at her best. Fans eagerly await her next matches as the clay season continues.
