(In Kenya) Hannah Cheptumo Approved for Cabinet Post Despite Criticism

Hannah Cheptumo is making headlines in Kenya after being approved by Parliament for a Cabinet position as the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, The Arts and Heritage. Her appointment, alongside Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, marks a significant moment in the recent government reshuffle.

Cheptumo's confirmation has sparked controversy due to her comments during the vetting process. She attributed femicide to women's dependency and education levels, suggesting that victims are often killed because they are seeking money. These remarks have been widely condemned by MPs and civil society groups, who describe them as harmful and misinformed. Many have called for the withdrawal of her nomination, citing her stance on gender-based violence as unacceptable

Despite the backlash, Cheptumo has outlined her vision for the Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts and Heritage. She aims to bolster the government's response to gender-based violence by establishing one-stop GBV desks in public hospitals and involving religious leaders, MPs, and county governments in tackling the issue. Cheptumo also pledged to advocate for increased funding for the ministry and pursue partnerships to support underfunded programs
