(In Ghana) Chairman Wontumi's Mining Firm Shut Down

 


The Ghanaian government has revoked Akonta Mining's license following allegations that the company illicitly sold portions of the protected Tano Nimri Forest to illegal miners. The company reportedly earned GH¢350,000 per concession.

Owned by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining reportedly operated without required permits, sparking public outrage and regulatory intervention.

The Minerals Commission clarified that Akonta Mining has no legal rights to operate in the Tano Nimri Forest. 

Despite submitting a lease application, the company’s presence in the reserve was unauthorised. 

The Lands Ministry has ordered a halt to all mining activities in the area.

Civil society groups are calling for investigations and prosecution of those involved in what is seen as an attack on Ghana’s environmental integrit
