Gulf of Mexico Keeps Its Name After Alabama Senate Rejects Renaming Bill

A proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" fell through in an Alabama Senate committee, putting the issue to rest. The Gulf of Mexico retains its original name, ending speculation about a potential rebranding.

Sponsored by Rep. David Standridge, the bill aimed to align with President Donald Trump’s executive order.

It proposed changes for all state and local entities in Alabama, including education institutions, but was met with concerns over implementation costs.

The bill’s failure follows a larger debate on renaming the Gulf, reflecting ongoing efforts by some states to adopt the new title.

While Alabama’s Senate committee deadlocked, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico plans to update its name to the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf.

The museum will gradually implement the change, with an estimated $40,000 cost for signage updates.
