Gabonese Footballer Aaron Boupendza Dies After Tragic Fall in China.

Gabonese international footballer Aaron Boupendza has tragically passed away at the age of 28, following a fatal fall from the 11th floor of his apartment in Hangzhou, China. 


The incident occurred in the early hours of April 16, 2025. Boupendza, who was playing for Chinese Super League side Zhejiang FC, reportedly fell from his residential building under circumstances that remain under active investigation.

The Gabonese Football Federation officially confirmed the heartbreaking news, while his former coach, Marius Șumudică, expressed his sorrow and shock over the incident. 

Chinese authorities have launched a thorough investigation, looking into multiple possibilities including suicide, an accidental fall, or foul play.

 Early unconfirmed reports indicate that Boupendza may have been involved in a heated argument with his brother shortly before the incident.

Boupendza was a widely respected and talented forward known for his impressive goal-scoring ability and dynamic style of play. 

His football journey began in France with Bordeaux, and he later represented Pau FC before making a significant mark in Turkey with Hatayspor. 

During the 2020-2021 season, he became the Turkish Super League’s top scorer, netting 22 goals — a feat that established him as one of Africa’s top emerging talents at the time.

Over the years, Boupendza built an international career, featuring for clubs in several countries, including:

Al Arabi (Qatar)

Al Shabab (Saudi Arabia)

FC Cincinnati (USA)

Rapid București (Romania)

Zhejiang FC (China)

On the international stage, Boupendza earned 35 caps for the Gabonese national team, scoring eight goals.  He played a crucial role in Gabon’s campaign during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, leaving a memorable mark on African football.



The news of his sudden death has sent shockwaves through the football world, with an outpouring of tributes from teammates, fans, clubs, and football officials. 

Gabon’s President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, released a heartfelt statement, honoring Boupendza’s contribution to both the national team and the pride he brought to the country.

Authorities in Hangzhou are currently piecing together the final moments of Boupendza’s life. Eyewitness accounts, security footage, and statements from those close to him, including his brother, are being reviewed as part of the investigation. 

For now, authorities have not officially ruled out any possibilities, and the Gabonese embassy in China is closely following the case.

Boupendza’s passing has also ignited conversations about the pressures faced by African players abroad, far from home, dealing with cultural, emotional, and career challenges.

The Gabonese community and football supporters around the world continue to mourn the loss of a player who, despite his young age, managed to leave an indelible legacy in global football.

 Fans gathered outside the national stadium in Libreville, lighting candles and laying down jerseys in tribute to Boupendza’s memory.


The Confederation of African Football (CAF), Hatayspor, FC Cincinnati, and several of his former clubs also sent condolences and expressed solidarity with Boupendza’s family and the Gabonese football fraternity.

An autopsy and toxicology report are expected in the coming days, which will provide more clarity on the circumstances of Boupendza’s death.  

Zhejiang FC has postponed their next league match in his honor, while plans for a memorial service in Gabon are currently underway.
