From Futsal courts, Atletico Madrid reject to one of the best Premier League forwards The Story of Matheus Cunha
Matheus Cunha rose from Brazil’s futsal courts to Premier League stardom with Wolverhampton Wanderers. After shining at Sion, Leipzig, and Atlético Madrid, he found his stride at Wolves, scoring 14 goals in 2023-24. Despite transfer rumors, the 25-year-old’s nine goals in 2024-25 show his commitment to elevating Wolves.

Born May 27, 1999, in João Pessoa, Brazil, Matheus Cunha’s journey began on futsal courts with Esporte Clube Cabo Branco. Spotted at 11, he joined Coritiba’s youth setup. His 2016 Dallas Cup brilliance led to a move to Swiss club Sion at 18 in 2017.

At Sion, Cunha dazzled, earning Swiss League Player of the Month. RB Leipzig signed him for €15M in 2018, where his stunning 2019 goal vs. Leverkusen earned a Puskás nomination. Limited minutes led to a 2020 move to Hertha BSC, where he scored 7 in 2020-21.

In 2021, Atlético Madrid paid €30M for Cunha. He scored 7 in his debut season but struggled for starts under Simeone, going goalless in La Liga in 2022-23. Frustrated, he joined Wolves on loan in January 2023 with a €50M buy clause.

Cunha’s 2023-24 season at Wolves was electric: 14 goals, including a historic hat-trick vs. Chelsea. In 2024-25, he’s bagged 9 goals in 17 games. Internationally, he won Olympic gold in 2021, scoring 21 in 24 U-23 games for Brazil.
