Ex-Man United star Jesse Lingard tells his grandfather's sex abuse trial accuser is 'jealous' of his family and 'what we've accomplished'
Jesse Lingard, formerly of Manchester United, testified in defense of his grandfather Kenneth Lingard at Liverpool Crown Court, where Kenneth faces 17 charges of historical indecent assault. Jesse suggested the accuser’s claims were motivated by jealousy over his family’s achievements, particularly after a November 2022 Channel 4 documentary showcased his career and Kenneth’s influence.
The documentary featured Kenneth, who trained Jesse from age five and took him to his first Manchester United match. While in Dubai, Jesse received a call from the accuser, who was upset about Kenneth’s role in the film and alleged he abused her between ages 5 and 19. Jesse, now playing for FC Seoul, said he was unaware of any allegations and advised her to contact the police.

He described Kenneth, 86, as a passionate and competitive figure crucial to his football success, stating he wouldn’t have made it without him. Jesse emphasized that he would have severed ties with Kenneth if he believed the accusations, adding that his mother would not have allowed him to live with Kenneth and his wife Pam during childhood if the claims were valid. He also denied knowledge of Kenneth’s alleged nickname “granddad perv.” The ongoing trial centers on the alleged assaults, which Kenneth denies. Jesse’s 45-minute court appearance underscored his loyalty to his grandfather, highlighting the significant role Kenneth played in his journey from a Manchester United youth player to a professional footballer with 232 first-team appearances and 35 goals for the club.
The case continues to unfold, drawing attention to Jesse’s family dynamics and his rise in football.
