Ecuadorian footballer Jackson Rodriguez is living through a nightmare after his wife and five-year-old son were kidnapped during a violent home invasion in the early hours of April 23, 2025. 

The 26-year-old defender for Club Sport Emelec was at his home in the Mucho Lote 2 neighborhood of Guayaquil when masked attackers stormed the property around 2:50 a.m.

According to reports, the intruders arrived heavily armed and used a sledgehammer to force their way into the house. Once inside, they asked about Rodriguez’s whereabouts. 

Fearing for his life, the footballer hid under a bed as the assailants abducted his wife and young son.  Witnesses say the kidnappers fled in a grey double-cab pickup truck, disappearing into the night.

Rodriguez, visibly shaken, made an emotional appeal for the safe return of his family. Speaking to local media, he said he had received no threats before the incident and was blindsided by the attack. His desperate plea has spread quickly across social media, prompting an outpouring of support from fans, teammates, and concerned citizens.

The incident has rattled Guayaquil, a city increasingly overwhelmed by violent crime and gang activity. Police have launched an investigation, but no arrests have been made so far.

 Authorities are also exploring links to a string of recent kidnappings, including that of fellow footballer Pedro Perlaza, who was abducted in December 2024, as well as another case reported in the same neighborhood earlier this year.

The football community in Ecuador has united in support of Rodriguez. Teammates and rival players alike are calling for justice and demanding stronger measures to curb the wave of insecurity gripping the region.

 The situation has reignited national concern over Guayaquil’s growing reputation as a hotspot for organized crime and lawlessness.

For now, the focus remains on locating Rodriguez’s family and ensuring their safe return.
