Ruben Amorim backs Andre Onana after tough night in Europa League!
Despite Onana's errors in Man United's 2-2 draw with Lyon, Amorim says he's made more mistakes as manager this season.
"I'm really confident in Andre," he says, focusing on training and picking the best XI for the crucial second leg at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim has publicly supported Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana following criticism after the team’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon.
Onana was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals, adding to his tally of eight errors leading to goals since last season, the most by any Premier League goalkeeper.
The mistakes come amid scrutiny, with former United player Nemanja Matic recently labeling Onana one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.
Amorim, who took over as United’s manager in November, deflected blame from his goalkeeper by admitting to his own shortcomings.
He told reporters he’s made more mistakes than Onana this season, emphasizing that he won’t single out the goalkeeper.
Instead, Amorim is focusing on maintaining a natural approach, saying there’s little he can say to help Onana in this moment.
His confidence in the goalkeeper remains, with plans to stick to the same process of training, analyzing games, and selecting the strongest lineup for each match.
Manchester United, currently 13th in the Premier League, face a critical second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford next Thursday.
With their league position offering little hope of European qualification, winning the Europa League is their best chance to secure a Champions League spot next season.
Amorim’s faith in Onana will be tested as the team prepares for this must-win game.
Despite the goalkeeper’s struggles, the manager’s comments suggest he’s banking on Onana to bounce back and deliver when it matters most.
The outcome of the next match could shape both Onana’s and United’s season.
